Family Perception

So what does your immediate family think of you? Do they already have a pre determinded idea on how you should behave, who you should be and what you should do? Do you interact with your parents in an open-minded way?

Well, I used to think that my parents knew everything that there is to know about me. I have definetly allowed them to interact with my girl friends, they know that I am ambitious politcally and professionally and they also know that I drink and party, but is that enough? Do you tell your parents when you are sick, when and if you are living abroad? Kinda hard right, since you might think that it will worry them. Do you want them to know that it is okay for you to make mistakes? Well - thats a real tough one. Parents dont think like that. They want you not to make the mistakes they did, and it is very hard to convince them that you will not learn in life until you make your own mistakes.

I sometimes wonder whether I am doing certain things in life right now, to satisfy my parents, because they worked hard to get me a good education in the America. Do I have to repay that debt in order to allow myself to follow my own dreams? When is it a good time to say,”Okay, I am glad you did this all for me, but let me make my own destiny now”.

My mentor says that parents already have a perception of us, and I guess i can agree with that statement now. So how do we change it ? Can we change it? Tell them the good and bad that comes with their own product. Well, I guess its going to be really hard but what we can try to do is this. If we have our own children one day, maybe we can act in a manner that is contradictory to what we perceive as “flaws” in our parents. Not jumping to conclusions, listening, allowing them to make their own decisions and mostly giving them the “PERCEPTION” that there might be no perception, for they are their own true identity - and that we as parents take the good and the bad.

  1. My immediate family consists of a nuclear base: Amma, Appa, and Ila. Pretty boring theriyada? Well of course parents have a pre-conceived notion that you need to fall into one of the Indian majors, and no need to list. They want me to behave decently always. Being open-minded more than frank with your parents will help you in the future because it can help pave the way to a better future. I used to think that my parents knew everything about me, but that was till I got to the varsity. You step into bigger and bigger worlds, and the last one that you will melt into is that of getting married….not on my list for a very long time ;)
If you tell them what you are doing in SL or in the US, they will feel more secure than worried. Not sure why you think it will worry them in anyway since you have probably portrayed your habits in front of them. Nothing concealed there.
If you make mistakes in a safe environment, your parents should not worry so much, although they will always worry. That is the role of being a parent as you will be destined to be one day too and then you will know what your parents went through.
Always know the debt that your parents have gotten themselves into to give you a good education, but your life is their repayment; for if they know that you have done well and you are safely on your feet, they will be satisfied.
And as you answered your own question about worried parents, we will all go through it too, so just pace yourself!
