The Fear of Failure

Recently I have found another aspect of my life that I fear. I fear that idea of failure at work. No not failure in rejection, visa or something along those lines - but fear that I might fail at work. I am not sure whether this has anything to do with my large ego that doesnt seem to quite fit my head or the high standards I try to set myself {and keep failing :)}. I just feel that for example if i do not accomplish a task - well there is a good chance that someone is going to like pointing fingers at me. So my usual tactic has been to apologize and accept my failure to get the task done on time and then learn from it. I guess I am going to continue to do that even in the future because I think one has to be “man” {this is just a phrase and no i am not a sexist} enough to accept his/her mistakes. But i really fear that one day I am just going to be considered an absolute retard by someone whom I respect. So i guess the fear is really disappointing someone or some people. Hmmmm interesting. Writing this post has actually made me think about what i actually fear. i guess the conclusion is - I fear disappointing people I respect.

Hmmmm let me dwell on that with a smoke …

  1. One DOES need to be man or even woman for that matter to own up to his/her mistakes…but I don’t think one needs to necessarily ‘fear’ disappointing others. I think its important that you know that you’ve done the best you can or more. That’s what counts at the end of the day…not what someone else thinks…:)

  2. True but as a human being I guess we all want that validation and imagine a situation where you just lost it …

  3. But machang thanesh, seriously think about it. At some point or the other that “someone” you respect and look upto has also failed someone. Great achievers leearn from both mistakes and successes. Failure is a word given to those who don’t attempt when the first try gives an unexpected result. Those who do not understand failure and those who do not promote and push to try again are DEFINITELY not worth looking upto. Their lives are built on tough standards that are inachievable. Only because of their fear.. being surpassed by those who look upto them.

Keep doing what ever you’re doing at work and kick ass!

Trust me.. life is the longest thing anyone could ever do! Keep trying and never be ashamed to ask for help!

  4. True machang …Needed a Lankan brother to kick some sense into me …LOL …

  5. ur most welcome!

  6. Failure is not some thing personnel. Its common to all living things and every one born with it. Even how succesful you are you will fail in on the day that u will leave every thing behind and stop breathing.Success is sweet but its some thing that every one have to work for. And these two has a thin line which devides them. We are standing on that line now. Where we will be tomorrow depends on what we did yesterday and what we do today. Keep up the good work.

  7. Failures are the pillars of sucess. So keep that in perspective okay! :)
